Does CBD Make You Tired?

The short answer is, "No, but the science on that is still evolving and developing". Current users of CBD report improved sleep patterns without leading to fatigue. Some even say they feel "rejuvenated" or "high" during their sleeps. And many of those who do report feeling more energized during the day are also frequent CBD users.

One of the most common side effects reported by current users is occasional insomnia, a feeling of being "too tired" that usually returns after sleeping for a couple of hours. There are also some who report that they fall asleep faster during the night when taking cannabidiol compared to when taking regular amounts of sleep. This effect could be caused by the fact that CBD reduces brain activity in the area related to deep sleep, also known as the hypothalamus.

Those who take CBD for chronic pain say that they don't experience fatigue while taking the drug, but they still report problems sleeping. Because CBD is a derivative of THC, which is an active ingredient in marijuana, some who smoke the plant find they cannot get high without also smoking pot. But that's not necessarily the case; while some people may experience mixed feelings or withdrawal symptoms when quitting pot, CBD can cause problems with sleeping and can lead to other serious problems like hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, and seizure disorders. It's important to note that the FDA has not approved CBD as a sleep aid.

Tiredness is one of the side effects that some who take high doses of CBD experience. In theory, high doses would block all pleasure responses, including those experienced when taking the drug. But since CBD only affects the level of the receptor for the opiate type substance, it doesn't actually "make you feel sleepy."

Besides the uncomfortable side effects of taking CBD, there are some other potential drawbacks as well. Like any pharmaceutical, CBD can interact with other medications and create problems. People with kidney disease, hypoglycemia, and epilepsy are especially at risk for interaction. Even if one does not have problems with interactions, CBD may not be as effective because CBD lacks opiate receptors. This makes hemp oil a highly desirable alternative to prescription sleep aids, especially since it does not produce the same uncomfortable side effects.

A long-term research project at the University of Palo Alto found another benefit of CBD. Researchers revealed that high doses of CBD (160 mg) shorten REM sleep on the day of its use while preventing early awakenings and interruption of nighttime sleep. Medium doses, on the contrary, bring closer the onset of the dreaming phase the next day after ingestion, but the duration of NREM sleep is somewhat reduced. On the other hand, small amounts of CBD are surprisingly invigorating and preventing bouts of daytime sleepiness in people prone to narcolepsy.

Some who take CBD for anxiety and sleep problems find that using cbd for anxiety makes their symptoms worse. This is because CBD does not act as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and does not bind to nor stimulate the serotonin receptors in the brain.
